AirNet Communications
Successfully Completes Large Operator
Melbourne, FL, November 6, 2001 - AirNet Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:
ANCC), the technology leader in base station products for
wireless communications, announced the successful completion of a field trial
with a large Asian wireless operator. AirNet had previously sold the trial
system to an AirNet reseller who had consigned it to the large operator for
evaluation. The large operator has now purchased the trial system from the
reseller and it continues to process commercial traffic.
The operator is a large cellular carrier in Asia, with a customer base of
over 1 million subscribers. The GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)
system purchased consists of an AdaptaCell
broadband, software-defined base station, several AirSite® Backhaul
Free
base stations and associated equipment amounting to approximately
US$500,000. AirNet also announced that it has finalized a sales and distribution
agreement with the local reseller who will have the right to sell AirNet
products and services to the large operator. This effectively positions AirNet
for future orders from the large operator as well as for providing full
in-country support of this customer. "This sale as well as the successful completion of the large operator
field trial is a significant accomplishment in our business," said Glenn
Ehley, president and CEO of AirNet. "This customer is a top-tier Asian
operator and AirNet plans on being a part of its growth strategy. This milestone
achieves AirNet's goal of a large operator purchasing AirNet's products and
validating our SDR technology." Due to competitive business concerns, the customer and the reseller have
specifically requested that AirNet refrain from disclosing their identity other
than the fact that they are a carrier and a local reseller based in Asia. The AirNet AdaptaCell is a broadband, software-defined solution that enables
wireless operators to easily to migrate to GPRS and EDGE using their existing
AirNet base stations by simply upgrading software. Such upgrades can be
performed remotely from a network control center, dramatically reducing the cost
and time of deploying the solution. Moreover, the AirSite Backhaul Free Base
Station provides an extremely cost-effective way to expand networks in secondary
and low-density areas. About AirNet
